Once again, a big thank you needs to be said to our Winegard families for visiting the Indigo store at Stone Road Mall on our annual fundraiser night this November. It was awesome to see so many familiar faces out getting a head start on their holiday shopping. Thanks to you we raised $700 in gift cards that can be used to purchase new books and items for our library makerspace. Students can keep an eye out for new items on the shelves in the new year!

Forest of Reading 2018 has begun at W.C.W.! We are starting slightly later than last year, but there was still a great turnout this morning at our first meeting for students in Grades 3 to 8. It's awesome to see students who are up for the challenge of reading 5 out of 10 books from each of our different book clubs. There was a very definite buzz in the air as students decided which ones to dive into first.
Many of our younger primary students have also begun hearing their teachers read from this year's Blue Spruce nominees. In the last two years our students have chosen the same favourite as their provincial counterparts-- we will see if it happens again this year! The Ontario School Libraries Association wants to know why your school library rocks!
OSLA knows that your library is an important place in your school. We want to know just how amazing it is! Is it the books? Is it the learning that happens there? Is it your teacher-librarian? Are there cool things that only happen in your library? The Why My School Library Rocks campaign is collecting student submissions to highlight the importance of school libraries. Have your students complete the submission form and they may be able to see their response with our collection of student responses. The Forest of Reading program kicked off this week at our school. This is a great extra-curricular event for students who enjoy reading and listening to great books. In the primary grades students will have the opportunity to hear and look at 10 awesome picture books by Canadian authors who are nominated for a Blue Spruce award. In Grades 3-8 students can join one of several book clubs with selections of both fiction and non-fiction books. When these students sign up for Forest of Reading book clubs, they commit to reading 5 out of 10 books from each club. Later on in the year students will have a chance to vote on their favourite book from their reading selections and we will have a celebration! Please contact Mrs. Upper if you have any questions.
Thanks to all WCW families who were able to attend our Chapters fundraiser night last month. We raised over $600! This money will be spent on new books for our library, as well as items for our Makerspace. On that note, over the past month, we have had many new students come to use the library Makerspace for sewing. It is amazing to see how quickly the trend has caught on! We have some basic supplies, but we are in desperate need of more fabric! If you are a sewer looking to edit your fabric stash, please consider donating your extra materials to our school. Besides fabric, we will happily take thread, buttons, yarn and other embellishments. Items can be dropped off directly to Mrs. Upper or in the office.
This coming Tuesday, November 22nd, please come out to Chapters for some shopping in support of our school library! For the third year running, Chapters is hosting a William C. Winegard fundraising night. From 5:00-9:00 p.m. on Nov. 22nd, with every purchase you make on most regularly-priced books, toys, and gifts from Chapters a percentage will be donated back to the school in Chapters gift cards. This will allow us to make new purchases of books and items for our Makerspace. This night has been a great success in past years. Just drop by the W.C.W. table that will be set up in the main aisle of Chapters, sign up as a supporter, and when you make a purchase let the cashier know you are contributing to our school.
Students in our board have a great reading resource at their fingertips! Our school subscribes to Overdrive, a digital library with hundreds of available book titles. All students need to do is use an electronic device to access the Overdrive website and then sign in with their UGCloud logins and passwords. Overdrive includes many of the same titles that can be found in our school library (including Forest of Reading selections), but also lots of books that are NOT in our school. If you haven't checked it out yet, WCW students and families, now is the time!
